6b. Improve professional practice

“Technology coaches demonstrate professional knowledge, skills and dispositions in content, pedagogical and technological areas as well as adult learning and leadership and are continuously deepening their knowledge and expertise” (ISTE 2011).

b. Engage in continuous learning to deepen professional knowledge, skills and dispositions in organizational change and leadership, project management and adult learning to improve professional practice.

Technology coaches contribute to a technology-enhanced learning environment by “engaging in continual learning,” in order to “deepen their knowledge and expertise,” so that they can “improve professional practice” (ISTE 2011).

During my coursework in the Seattle Pacific University Digital Education Leadership Master’s Degree program, I formed a strong professional learning community (PLC) with my colleagues in the 2015 cohort, as well as the members of the 2014 cohort. We shared a common purpose and interacted regularly, through live online discussions, as well as multiple asynchronous, but nonetheless collaborative, learning experiences. These relationships modeled the supportive community every technology coach needs to build as a digital education leader at a school.

One of my SPU DEL courses focused specifically on the coaching practice. The “hands-on” learning experience in this course required me to build a peer coaching relationship with another teacher. I collaborated with a teacher-librarian to evaluate and redesign the school information literacy curriculum.

As a teacher leader and Technology Integration Specialist, I participated in an independent school professional learning cohort that focused on digital education leadership. I collaborated with colleagues to build a dynamic school technology program, including professional learning experiences designed with best practices in adult learning in mind.

These experiences allowed me to deepen my knowledge and skills in “organizational change and leadership, project management and adult learning” and led to improved professional practice for me and my colleagues. (ISTE 2011).
